Are you a current Student Organization Executive Board member or general body member who is looking for training and developmental opportunities that will assist you with being your best in your role? Are you looking to learn about various resources and tools necessary that can help you maximize your leadership potential? Are you looking to create the best student organization experience for you and your members? If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then Student Organization Essentials is right for you! 

The Student Organization Essential trainings and workshops are comprised of four different opportunities: 

Leadershops: These trainings and workshops are offered throughout the year for current executive board members and general body members. The topics offered assist student org leaders with learning how to properly do their job and how to support their student organization. 

Example Topics: 

  • Treasurer Training and Budget Management – managing a budget and allocating resources efficiently
  • Conflict Management – Learning how to address and resolve conflicts within a group 
  • Time Management – Developing skills for managing time effectively and staying organized 
  • Event Planning – Understanding how to plan and execute events successfully using contracts and catering 
  • Understanding Leadership – Defining what it means to be a leader and the different types of leadership styles 
  • Communicating Effectively – Learning how to communicate effectively with peers, team members, and other groups 
  • Etc. 

Executive Leadership: This certificate program is a high-level program for Student Organization Executive Board leaders. The topics offered assist executive board members in critical thinking and provide tools on how to properly manage large teams and large events. 

Example Topics: 

  • Executive board networking opportunities
  • Understanding why building diverse teams are important 
  • Critical Thinking and Decision Making – Learning how to make decisions based on critical thinking, considering different perspectives and assessing potential consequences 
  • Communicating Through Leadership – Learning how to communicate effectively in efforts to motivate and inspire teams 
  • Problem Solving and Conflict Management – Learning how to manage conflict within teams 
  • Representation and Advocacy – Understanding how to represent and advocate for their group or community effectively 
  • Professionalism and Ethics – Developing the understanding of ethical principles and practices, how to conduct themselves in a professional manner, and how to maintain confidentiality 
  • Etc. 

Provisional Training: Newly recognized student organizations and their leaders are invited to participate in training to learn about the Student Involvement and Leadership team, advising, and how they can set up their organization to be successful in the first year.  

Online “Summer” Canvas Training: Student organization leaders must participate in online summer training through the Canvas website. These trainings are mandatory and assist leaders with preparing for their roles during the academic year. In order to have access to their SABO accounts and other important resources, these trainings and training quizzes must be completed before the third week of September. 
Important Note: The Canvas site will also be utilized to store student organization resources, including recordings of our trainings, guides, and relevant discussions.   

 

The Student Involvement and Leadership team has curated these experiential training and development workshops geared towards assisting students with being their best! These trainings, workshops, and events are specifically designed to assist student organization leaders with having a successful semester as they lead and build community. These trainings and workshops are created for student organization leaders who are recognized through Student Involvement and Leadership, but any student organization leaders can attend.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Using knowledge acquisition and critical thinking skills, student organization leaders will be able to manage their organizations as demonstrated by their understanding of new policies and procedures established by Student Affairs departments and the university.
  • Student organization leaders will use intrapersonal competence and practical skills to display an array of effective communication skills.
  • Through thoughtful workshops and discussion, student organization leaders will be able to cultivate new ideas and ways to build communities and teams. 
  • Student organization leaders will be able to identify problems within their community as educated and involved community members and learn and propose solutions.

Leadershops – Spring 2024 

These trainings and workshops are offered throughout the year for current executive board members and general body members. The topics offered assist student org leaders with learning how to properly do their job and how to support their student organization. 

Week 1 – Treasurer’s Training Refresher (1 hour Refresher Trainings): 

Facilitator: Charisse Gutierrez, Business Manager, Student Activities Business Office (SABO)

*Mandatory for Treasurers; Presidents are welcomed

  • Friday, January 26th, 12pm-1pm | Student Activities Center (SAC):

Description: Attending this treasurer training will provide current treasurers with helpful resources regarding how to manage your organization’s funds, as well as be beneficial in learning and understanding the rules and regulations of the Student Activities Business Office (SABO). The facilitators will use this refresher training to go through best practices for treasurers to avoid some of the issues noticed last semester. *This training is mandatory for all student organization treasurers recognized through Student Involvement and Leadership.


Week 2 – Leadership Vision Boards

Friday, February 2nd, 12pm-1pm | Student Activities Center (SAC):

Description: Discover the power of visualization and strategic planning as you craft your vision for success. Through guided exercises and hands-on activities, you'll clarify your goals, articulate your values, and map out actionable steps to lead your organization to new heights!


Week 3 – Travel Planning Refresher (1 hour Refresher Training) 

Facilitator: Serafina Genise, Assistant Director for Student Involvement and Leadership 

*Mandatory for student organizations who will be traveling Spring 2024

Friday, February 16th, 12pm-1pm | Student Activities Center (SAC): RSVP here 

Description: If your student organization is planning to take any trips or participate in travel this semester, your attendance is required at this workshop! We will discuss important policies and procedures, emergency procedures, how to work with transportation companies (bus, car, etc.), and how to satisfy all travel requirements. We will be available to answer any questions and provide information to improve the quality of your experience. *This training is mandatory for all student organizations (one member from your organization should attend) recognized 


Week 4 – Tech Awareness

Description: Discover the ins and outs of social media platforms and learn how to leverage them effectively to market your organization and events. From crafting compelling content to understanding analytics and engagement strategies, this workshop equips you with the skills needed to amplify your organization's presence online. Join us to unlock the potential of social media as a powerful tool for connection, outreach, and growth.


Week 4 – Food Safety and BBQ Guidelines Workshop 

Facilitator: John Nason, University Sanitarian, Dining Services and Ben Garnecki, Manager, Fire Inspection Bureau

Description: With the help of RU Dining Services, you can prepare to have a food vendor come to campus, host a cookout, bake sale, or barbecue! Attending a food safety workshop is the only way for your organization to conduct these events, so make sure that you attend this workshop’s offerings before holding your event. The workshop will detail proper food handling and cooking procedures as well as EMS and Fire Safety guidelines. Refreshments will be served. 

Week 5 – Conflict Resolution

Description: Join us for an interactive workshop on conflict resolution skills tailored for your organization. In this workshop, you'll learn effective communication techniques, active listening strategies, and collaborative problem-solving approaches to navigate and resolve conflicts constructively. Gain valuable insights and practical tools to manage conflict while fostering a culture of understanding and cooperation in your organization.

Week 6 – Understanding the Re-Registration Process and Transitioning

Description: It’s re-registration time again! Get ready for the upcoming year and familiarize yourself with the re-registration process. Remember re-registration is mandatory for all organizations to retain their recognition for the next year! Refreshments will be served. Along with Re-Registration comes effectively transitioning to a new executive board! Attending this workshop will provide outgoing officers with the skills to support incoming officers as they changeover, as well as helpful tips regarding how to market their leadership positions on a resume/at interviews. *We encourage orgs to facilitate elections for the following academic year by the week following spring break.


Week 7 – Transitions Training: Leading the Scarlet Way

Description: Transitioning into a student organization executive board position can be stressful. Attending one of the Leading the Scarlet Way programs will provide new officers with the skills to hit the ground running once they officially adopt leadership roles. Refreshments will be served. *We encourage orgs to facilitate elections for the following academic year by the week following spring break.
